A Short History of Atwood Marina East
Gary Spahr; the previous owner of Atwood Lake Boats, bought the Atwood East Marina from Barry Trusel in 1969. Gary owned “The Sailing Center” near Magnolia at that time. He wanted to expand his business and the East Marina was a perfect opportunity to do so. When The East Marina first opened, Gary sold O”day and Sunfish Sailboats, Harris Pontoons Boats, and Mirrocraft Fishing Boats. The original building was just a single floor. Gary added a second story and also expanded the basement area. There was a service center located in the basement and shortly thereafter a restaurant was started upstairs. As an aside for all you sailors, the largest sailboat on Atwood at that time was a 19’ Mariner 2 + 2 O’day. As time progressed the East Marina became the Marina of choice for Atwood Lake. Gary expanded the product line to include several brands of pontoons. He also added boating accessories and eventually a nauitical gift shop. Since Brian Valot took over ownership, Ed Koren and son Eric have managed the day to day operations. The Marina is a very popular area to rent boats, and they currently have approximately 215 dockers. They have a busy event schedule thru the summer also. They frequently have on the lake drive-in movie nights which are open to the public. Their annual fish-fry is anxiously awaited each fall. If you are into fishing, both Ed an Eric know all the hot spots on the lake. Marina east is primarily known as a rental facility, however, they also sell boats in conjunction with the West Marina.
